Marine science day in Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia

Nov. 28, 2023
Date: March 17, 2024

The Institute of Oceanology of Polish Academy of Sciences (IOPAN), Gdynia Maritime University and Gdansk Medical University and WWF Poland are inviting all locals and visitors to join the Save The Baltic Sea Expedition team for a hike between Gdansk and Gdynia, stopping at several ‘knowledge hubs’ along the route where participants will gain hands-on knowledge about our sea and navigation from local scientists.

On March 17th, the team of 10 Save The Baltic Sea hikers who started their journey from Lithuania will arrive in Gdansk, where everyone willing to hike together for a day will be welcome to join at 9:00 a.m. at Brzeźno Pier. From there, we will travel to Sopot, where an interactive educational program about sea level rise and workshops examining Baltic Sea pollution will take place.

“Local residents need to know about these problems in order to make appropriate decisions and adapt to future sea-related threats,” says Tymon Zielinski, professor at IOPAN and one of the event organizers.

During the stop, we will also hear about the WWF Poland volunteer activities on the Polish coast and learn how to act when encountering an injured animal on the beach. You will also see stands prepared by students that delve into environmental issues.

After these activities, we will walk to the final point of the journey – Gdynia Maritime University, where you can try out the role of a captain in a ship navigation simulator and visit the Antoni Ledóchowski Planetarium and the Astronavigation Laboratory.
